Initially minted in the "Liberty Head" version until 1907, the "Indian Head" series was issued for 26 years between 1907 and 1933, the year production ceased due to the Great Depression. Both versions are, however, known as "Eagle," in reference to the eagle, the emblematic animal of the United States. 

On the "Indian Head Eagle" coin, engraver Saint-Gaudens engraved the head of Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, following the recommendations of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was then very interested in the appearance of his country's coins. History will remember that some Americans regretted the absence of the traditional Phrygian cap instead of the Native American headdress.
