It bears the effigy of William III, who was then King of the Netherlands. These coins were minted until 1889.

The profile of William III is signed Johan Philip Matthias Menger (JPMM: 1845-1912), engraver of coins and medals at the Royal Mint in Utrecht. It was in Florence during the 13th century that florins—ancient monetary units of the Low Countries—were minted. Known in Latin as "Florenus," these coins were widely accepted throughout Europe. Eventually, they would be used specifically for minting the national currency of the Netherlands.

The "Gulden Florijn," or "Gold Florin," was born. After the fall of Napoleon's Empire, and in order to preserve the value of the florin, the government of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands decided to mint the inscription "God zij met ons" (God be with us) on the rim of the coin. Exactly 60 years after the establishment of the modern florin, the first Dutch 10-florin gold investment coin was struck. King William III, then sovereign of the Netherlands, was honored with a coin bearing his image.

This first series of coins was minted from 1876 to 1889. The artist Johan Philip Matthias Menger (1845-1912) was commissioned to design the sovereign's profile. A renowned engraver of coins and medals, he inscribed his initials "JPMM" at the base of the sovereign's neck. A total of 3,719,857 copies of the 10 Florin "William III" coin were produced.

Wilhelmina, whose reign lasted 58 years, is depicted as a young woman wearing a tiara or as an older woman, representing various emblematic periods of her life. The last design shows the queen in profile with her hair in a chignon and adorned with a brooch. This reproduction is the work of the engraver Hoitsema, and the coin was minted from 1925 to 1933, with a total mintage of 12,286,067.
